Canyon has its own fence rules, separate from Amarillo's. The City of Canyon's zoning regulations, adopted in December 2023, cover when you need a permit, how tall a fence can be in the front yard, which materials are allowed and what has to stay clear at street corners. Here is a plain-English summary with links to the city's documents.
Do you need a permit?
For most fences, no. Canyon's zoning regulations say no fence permit is required to build or relocate a fence up to 8 feet tall; a fence taller than 8 feet needs a permit. The City of Canyon's building page also lists fences not over 8 feet high among the work exempt from building permits. The city's online permit portal has a separate fence permit application for commercial fence projects.
Not needing a permit doesn't mean anything goes. The height, location and material rules below still apply.
Height and location
- Front yards. A fence or wall in front of the required front setback line can't be taller than 40 inches. (Property in the I District may have fences up to 8 feet in the front yard.)
- Right-of-way. No fence may be placed in the public right-of-way. Confirm where your property line is before posts go in.
- Corner lots. Nothing, including a fence, may block the Clear Sight Triangle at an intersection without written consent from the Public Works Director. The triangle is measured 35 feet from the intersection along the curb lines and covers the space between 2 and 9 feet above the ground.
Materials
- Chain link is not allowed in the front yard or in front of the building's façade (except in the I District). Chain link in a side or back yard is not restricted by that rule.
- Barbed wire, razor wire, concertina wire and electric fencing are prohibited in the city. The exceptions include barbed wire or electric fencing used with an agricultural or ranching use, and barbed wire on fences around public utility facilities.
Before you build
- Call Canyon's Planning & Development Department at (806) 655-5014 (the number on the city's building page) to confirm the rules for your lot and zoning district.
- Check your HOA covenants or deed restrictions, if any. They can be stricter than the city.
- Call 811 before setting posts; Texas law requires it before digging.
- If your property is outside Canyon's city limits, the city's zoning rules may not apply, so ask Randall County what does.
What to ask a fence company
Ask whether they've built fences in Canyon before and know the 40-inch front-yard limit and the corner rules, who places the 811 request, and what posts and spacing they use for Panhandle wind (see building a fence that stands up to the wind). Our hiring checklist covers the rest.
Where we fit in
This site is a free referral service, not a fence company. Requests from Canyon are welcome: if you send a request, we pass it to one independent local fence contractor, who confirms they serve your address, looks at the property and quotes you directly.
General information only, not legal or engineering advice. Rules change, so confirm with the agency linked below or a licensed professional before you start work.
